High-level roundtable constituted on 21st Century Economic Roadmap

Chaired by Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering, the first meeting of the high-level roundtable on the 21st Century Economic Roadmap held yesterday reviewed the proposed goal and timeline within which the roadmap is to be drawn. 

The proposed goal of the economic roadmap is “High Income GNH Society by 2030”, the threshold of which is a GNI per capita of USD 12,375.

Punakha dzongkhag’s internal audit is investigating Toebisa gup and Dochula-Menchuna tshogpa for allegedly embezzling contributions made for a fire victim of Begana chiwog.

Nikachu HEP construction almost half complete

The 118MW Nikachu Hydroelectric project marked a significant milestone when it completed excavation of the head-race tunnel from both ends of the first and second phase on January 23.  

NPL not a major economic crisis: Finance Minister  

While the rate of non-performing loans (NPL) has been rising in the country, Finance Minister Namgay Tshering said that it is not a major economic crisis. 

Responding to Nganglam MP Choida Jamtsho’s question on the deteriorating economic situation from the growing NPL yesterday, finance minister said that the current NPL stood at Nu 21.5 billion (B), which is about 15 percent.

Seven percent GST across all board will eliminate 11 BST slabs

Should the Parliament pass the GST law, tax regime in the country would be digitised and integrated through an on-line platform. During a consultative meeting with the members of the private sector at the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) office yesterday, Lyonchhen Dr Lotay Tshering said that GST is the way forward to institute a 21st-century tax regime.

A 32-year-old excavator operator died on the spot when a tree fell on the excavator at around 2pm in Nabji, Trongsa on January 20. The excavator was excavating a farm road and the operator was alone at the time of the incident. The body of the operator was recovered at around 3pm yesterday. More than 40 people including Police, locals and forest officials helped in the recovery. Since the machine was covered with a huge tree and mud, it took some hours to extract it.

A fire that raged a temporary shed of open-air prisoners in Lingzhi, Thimphu on January 15 affected 10 individuals who lost all their properties. But no casualties were reported. The highlanders from the five chiwogs of Lingzhi gewog provided victims with mattresses, blankets, clothes and utensils. The cause of the fire is believed to be an electric short circuit. Republic of Korea Ambassador to Bhutan Kang-il Hu handed over seven protocol cars to Foreign Secretary Kinga Singye in Thimphu yesterday morning. Korea donated the cars to the foreign ministry under the small-scale grant assistance scheme. So far Bhutan has received 18 cars. The two countries enjoy warm and cordial relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1987.
