In a remarkable display of grit, resilience, and skill, Paro FC achieved a historic 2-1 victory over Nepal’s Church Boys United in the AFC Challenge League Preliminary Stage yesterday in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Despite facing a fervent crowd of 11,500, with Bhutanese supporters in the stadium outnumbered, Paro FC showcased a commendable performance under pressure. The team, led by Japanese football icon Keisuke Honda, demonstrated exceptional cohesion and tactical acumen throughout the match.

The game started with Church Boys United breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute. However, Paro FC quickly responded. In a pivotal moment, winger Kinga Wangchuk equalised just two minutes later. A precise long-range cross from Marco deflected off the opposing goalkeeper, presenting Kinga Wangchuk with a golden opportunity, and the winger capitalised on the chance, finding the back of the net with a deft left-footed finish.

The first half ended with the score tied at 1-1, setting the stage for a gripping second half. In the second half, the intensity heightened as both teams battled for dominance.

Paro FC’s decisive moment came in the 67th minute when forward Opoku delivered the winning goal. After skillfully dribbling near the penalty area, Opoku unleashed a powerful strike that proved too formidable for the Church Boys United goalkeeper to handle.

Paro FC’s head coach, Puspalal Sharma, presented a completely new team yesterday, with nine out of the starting 11  being international players. The Bhutanese contingent included Kinga Wangchuk and Chetrim. This new tactical approach, combined with a fortified defense and a series of crucial saves by the goalkeeper, was instrumental in securing the win.

The match was further complicated by adverse weather conditions, with rain turning the pitch into a muddy battleground. Despite these challenges, Paro FC’s professionalism shone through, committing only three fouls compared to Church Boys United’s 14 with two yellow cards.

Many believe that Paro FC could have easily won against Church Boys United if the game had been held at Changlimithang Stadium  or the Woochu Sports Arena in Paro.

Speaking to the Nepali media post-match, Honda said that the game was challenging for Paro FC because the opponent played aggressively. However, he expressed happiness that the club’s aspirations were fulfilled.

Paro FC President Karma Jigme, present in Nepal for the match, celebrated the historic victory with pride. “We’ve finally done it. After years of hard work and determination, Paro FC has achieved huge success, and it’s a monumental moment for Bhutanese football,” he said. “A heartfelt thanks to all Bhutanese and players for giving 100 percent on and off the field. Your dedication, passion, and effort have brought us to this incredible achievement.”

Karma Jigme also expressed gratitude to everyone who traveled to Nepal to cheer for the team. “We are also deeply grateful to the people of Nepal and supporters from around the world who stood by us. Your encouragement means the world to us.”
