To control the dog population a 17-day mass dog sterilisation and rabies vaccination programme is underway in Tsirang. Tsirang livestock sector in collaboration with the National Centre for Animal Health, Thimphu and Regional Livestock Development Centre in Wangdue is conducting the campaign. The dzongkhag has over 3,000 dogs according to the population survey carried out in March. Of that, 80 percent are pets. Half the pets have not been vaccinated. There are about 600 stray dogs to be sterilised or vaccinated.
To ensure good coverage, the programme would also set up clinics in all twelve gewogs.
