A multi-car parking building in Phuentsholing that has a capacity to accommodate 202 cars opened since January 11 at Nu 10 for an hour.
Phuentsholing thrompon, Uttar Kumar Rai, said the three-storied parking building is the first multi-car parking in the country.
“We kept the parking fee nominal because we want more people to use it,” he said.
The thromde would manage the three-layer parking building for a year and then outsource it to private players.
The parking lot has a biometric automated entrance, which is expected to stop revenue leakages. It also is equipped with CCTV facilities.
Uttar Kumar Rai said the parking congestion in the town would be reduced now.
The parking has also opened a thoroughfare, which was closed during the construction of the parking lot. That would also ease congestion.
Meanwhile, the parking lot was constructed at a cost of Nu 65 million (M).
Thromde has also provided 64 parking spaces for the taxi association, which the taxi association’s representative, Tshewang Dorji, said is less.
“Thromde has told they would adjust and provide us more,” he said.
The representative said taxis are facing parking problems for a long time. “The current parking space is not sufficient.”
Meanwhile, with the multi-car parking operational, 150 parking spaces in Zangtogpelri, Deki Lane, and Gadoe Lam would be lifted and vehicles would not be allowed to park.
However, since these areas are in core areas in the town, shoppers would be allowed 10 minutes time to load and unload.
Thrompon Uttar Kumar Rai said these lanes would be used as pedestrian roads.
“It’s one of the many steps thromde is taking to make the town roads to pedestrian lanes. When other projects to decongest the town is completed, the entire roads inside the core area would be pedestrianized.”
There are currently about 500 parking spaces in Phuentsholing, excluding the new spaces at the new building. There are about 150 spaces to park heavy vehicles in Phuentsholing in the truck parking area.
