Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay yesterday left for Thailand, where he will deliver the keynote speech at the 15th United Nations Day celebration of Vesak, a press release from the foreign ministry states.  Thailand is hosting the celebration that’s themed, Buddhist Contribution for Human Development.

The prime minister will be in Thailand until May 26 and during he visit will call on the Prime Minister of Thailand, Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha. Bhutan is a member of the organising committee led by the permanent missions of Sri Lanka and Thailand to the UN.

Vesak celebrates three sacred occasions – birth, enlightenment and passing away of the Buddha. According to the press release, the celebration was by the UN General Assembly in 1999 recognised Vesak celebration and the first celebration was held at the UN headquarters in 2001.
