Punakha—Residents of Chubu gewog in Punakha were urged to stay alert against rising scams, criminal activity, and health risks during a day-long sensitisation programme held at the Chubu Gewog Centre yesterday.

Speaking to residents of three chiwogs of Chubu gewog, Lieutenant Colonel Chador Namgay, Superintendent of Police in Punakha, said that rural residents are increasingly falling victim to scammers. “Punakha police have handled numerous cases where individuals were duped out of their hard-earned money—some of which could not be recovered.”

He urged them to remain vigilant against such schemes.

More than 100 residents gathered to participate in the advocacy programme organised by the gewog administration.

This year till date, Punakha Police Station has recorded six scam-related cases, of which only one case was formally registered and resolved, while the remaining five were not registered.

The Superintendent also addressed issues such as rape, alcohol-related offenses, battery, and domestic violence.

He said that domestic violence victims are not limited to women, pointing out that men, too, can be victims.

This year, six cases of domestic violence were officially registered with Punakha police, while 35 cases were resolved through mediation. Two cases were withdrawn, and four others resulted in formal charges and convictions.

Health officials also participated in the session, using the opportunity to raise awareness about non-communicable diseases.

They emphasised the importance of early detection, prevention, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In addition, they provided guidance on accessing emergency medical services and underscored the significance of proper sanitation and hygiene in disease prevention.

The session aimed to empower the community with knowledge to improve overall well-being and reduce health risks.

Chubu Gup Jimba Gyeltshen said that many residents lack awareness about legal and health-related matters. “This was the perfect opportunity to bring in authorities to provide advocacy talks on crime, health, and spirituality.”

Chubu gewog is home to more than 2,445 residents across 350 households, making it one of the largest gewogs in the dzongkhag.
