Gyalpoizhing police have charged a 22-year-old man in Mongar for alleged rape of a minor and impregnating her.

The accused has been detained since November 11 at Gyalpoizhing police station.

The case surfaced after the minor’s mother informed the matron of the school on September 13.

When the minor was taken for a medical check-up at Mongar eastern regional referral hospital, it was learnt that the girl was seven months pregnant. The school authorities then informed the police.

According to the victim’s statement to the police, she and the accused knew each other through the social media app, WeChat, and they had physical relationship during the second nationwide lockdown when she was on vacation at her village.

Meanwhile, the 15-year-old victim gave birth to a baby girl. She has been studying in eight grade.
