Assistance: Police saved a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old woman from committing suicide during two incidences in Thimphu.

A person called the police helpline 113 to report that a boy had jumped from Changjiji’s cantilever bridge into the Thimchhu at around 9:30 pm on July 17.

The boy was washed downstream for about 600 metres when he got stuck in a hedge on the river bank.

According to police, the boy’s mother, who was with the boy along with her younger son tried to stop the boy from jumping into the river. It was the boy’s birthday.

“Our men heard the mother crying for help and following the boy which helped our men to spot the boy,” a police official said.

Police pulled the boy out from the river and he was taken to the hospital. The boy is in stable condition and was discharged yesterday. The boy lives with his mother and stepfather.

On Saturday night, a team of traffic police stopped a woman, 20, from jumping into the river near Lungtenzampa bridge. The team was carrying out highway checking when they heard the woman scream.
