With the completion of the dhamngoi zomdu for thromde election on November 6, residents in Samdrupjongkhar thromde nominated two candidates for the thrompon.

Kipse demkhong nominated Ugyen Wangchuk, 34, as thrompon candidate on November 4 and Samdrupgatshel demkhong nominated Thinley Namgay, 39, during the dhamngoi zomdu conducted on November 5.

Thinley Namgay has a Bachelors in Commerce and has served as thromde tshogpa of Samdrupgatshel demkhong for three years. He has also served as a Bhutan Chamber for Commerce and Industry (BCCI) representative of Samdrupjongkhar for two years.

While there were no thrompon candidates from other demkhongs. Samdrupjongkhar Bar demkhong does not even have a candidate for the thromde tshogpa.

During the dhamngoi zomdu, there was also poor voter turnout.

In Samdrupjongkhar Bar demkhong zomdu, only two voters turned up during the dhamngoi zomdu. Similarly, only five people attended the zomdu in Samdrupjongkhar Toed demkhong, and four in Samdrupjongkhar Maed demkhong.

The Samdrupjongkhar Toed demkhong has about 73 eligible voters and Samdrupjongkhar Maed demkhong has about 83 registered voters, while the Samdrupjongkhar Bar has about 48 registered voters.

The upcoming thromde election will be held along with the local government (LG) elections on December 22.

Meanwhile, the dhamngoi zomdu for the third LG elections of the 11 gewogs in Pemagatshel began on November 5.

The election officials were divided into three teams: Nganglam, Nanong-Shumar and Khar-Yurung. The teams have completed zomdu in the three gewogs so far. The zomdu will end on November 16.
