Former TV producer wins National Council seat in Trashigang

Sonam Tobgyel, a former BBS producer won a landslide victory in Bhutan’s National Council election on April 20.

Sonam Tobgyel secured 24.83 percent of the total votes cast, winning 12,958 votes in all from 71 polling stations in Trashigang.




Gongsar Karma Chhopel secured 5,584 votes.

Tobgyel’s extensive travels and connection with farmers paid off, as he was able to understand their concerns and connect with voters.

His past experience as a TV presenter also played a significant role, enabling him to reach out to a broader audience and connect with voters.

Tobgyel promised to focus on three key areas: economic development, good governance, and improving the legal system. He also pledged to ensure that his commitments are achieved within two to three years.

National Council is the House of Review consisting of 25 members, and has the duty to review legislation passed by the National Assembly.The members are elected for a five-year term.
