Rabies: Two calves and a puppy have been reported dead in Orong, Samdrupjongkhar on January 22, which livestock officials believe could have happened after the animals were bitten by rabid dog.

Test proved positive. Brain samples have been sent to National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH) in Serbithang, Thimphu.

About 40 people have been given anti-rabies vaccine.

It has been reported that the animals died soon after the death of a rebid puppy.

The veterinary doctor Karma Phuntsho said that there is a possibility that calves could have been bitten by wild animals.

Health assistant Nima said that people were vaccinated after health officials received information that they had consumed raw milk.

“Those who were given anti-rabies shot are under observation,” said Nima.

It has also been reported that a dog died in Narphung yesterday that tested positive for rabies.

Karma Phuntsho said that as an immediate control measure, efforts are being made to vaccinate all stray and pet dogs and to create awareness about the danger of the viral disease.

Since January 19, veterinary officials have vaccinated about 250 dogs in Orong chiwog and more than 200 in other chiwogs including Narphung.

The number of people visiting hospital and health centres has risen sharply after the news of rabies outbreak.
