Trongsa district court on October 7 sentenced a 23-year-old man to nine years for rape of a minor .
Office of the Attorney General submitted that the man had a sexual relationship with the victim in one of the hotels in Trongsa on May 26. The medical report of the victim confirmed that they had a sexual relationship.
The defendant was found guilty of rape of a girl above 12 years and convicted for nine years. As per sections 184 and 9 of the Bhutan Penal Code, he was liable for a second-degree offence with a sentence to imprisonment ranging between nine and 15 years.
To protect the privacy of the victim, the court held an in-camera hearing in the presence of her mother and a lady staff of the court.
The judgment states that the defendant need not have to pay any compensation as the victim has submitted in front of the court that she doesn’t want any compensation.
The defendant has 10 working days to appeal against the decision.
