Men’s team from Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) and women’s team from Royal Thimphu College (RTC) won the week-long institutional volleyball championship in Changlingmithang yesterday.

The first final played between RTC and Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital(JDWNRH) in women’s category saw the former defeat JDWNRH with two points in the deciding set to seal the championship. RTC women won the set 15-13.

It was a slow and nervous start for team JDWNRH. RTC team comprising of players involved on regular sports event dominated the game. The two won two sets each to play the deciding set.

JDWNRH came strong in the second set and continued with strong form in the third set, defeating RTC 19-25 in the fourth set. However, RTC got back to its strong form in the deciding set to win the institutional championship in their debut.

A total of six women teams participated in the championship that began from October 24.

RTC ‘s women team took part in the championship for the first time and defeated JDWNRH who won the championship in the previous edition.

The women’s winning team was awarded Nu 20,000 and certificates by the federation and the runners-up team Nu 15,000 and certificates.

RTC won a spot in the final with a convincing three sets victory against the women’s team from Royal Academy of Performing Arts in the semi-final. The former recorded 3-1 victories over the runners-up team of the previous edition.

JDWNRH defeated a team from Scan Cafe with 3-2 sets to qualify for the finals.

It was a tough final for the men’s team from Ministry of Education (MoE) against team RBP that won the final 3-1 sets yesterday. The team won single set despite putting on a tough challenge against the well-established contender.

MoE played strong in the third set to extend the game to the fourth quarter and took away the set 25-22. However, RBP bounced back in the following set and sealed the championship with 25-15 victory in the fourth set.

The men’s winning team was given Nu 30,000 along with certificates and the runners-up won Nu 20,000 and certificates. A total of 12 men teams took part in the championship this year.
