Following the completion of enquiries, the Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) is currently reviewing the investigation report of police personnel responsible for the recent prison escapes.

Between October and November last year, there have been 13 prison escapees from the detention centre in Thimphu, Chamgang central jail, the national referral hospital (JDWNRH), and outpost custody in Samdrupjongkhar.

The RBP rearrested all the escapees in the following days from different locations with the majority of them trying to cross the border into India.

To fix accountability on the police personnel involved in security lapses that lead to prisoners escaping, the RBP launched an enquiry.

The police personnel involved in the prison escape from Chamgang jail were transferred out of Thimphu and demoted, Kuensel learnt.

A police official said that disciplinary actions would be initiated after the review of the investigation report. “The actions will be taken immediately. We are trying to complete it as early as possible.”

“Depending on the degree of their involvement in the security lapses, they will be transferred, demoted, and warned,” added the official.

In line with the service rules and regulations of RBP, the police official said, the promotion will be withheld for two to three years depending on the severity of their involvement in the security lapses.
