Archery:  The Samtse dzongkhag team emerged as the winner of the Mewang Gyalsey Archery Tournament from among 140 teams from 20 dzongkhags.

The league round was held in 11 different dzongkhags from January 12 to 21, from where 39 teams qualified for the knockout round and 27 teams played the quarter finals at Gyalpoizhing in Mongar.

The semi finals was held in Gyalpoizhing, Mongar on the occasion of the first Birth Anniversary of HRH The Gyalsey.

After defeating Toeb United of Punakha and Good Boys of Paro in the finals played on February 8 in Gyalpoizhing, the Samtse Dzongkhag team took away the winner’s cash prize of Nu 300,000.

In 15 rounds, the Samtse Dzongkhag team won two sets. The first set was won in the eighth round while the second set was won in the 13th round. However, the two other opponents settled for a penalty shoot-out to secure the second position. In the penalty shoot-out, Toeb United hit a karey to grab the second position and the Nu 240,000 cash prize.

Good Boys from Paro Dzongkhag emerged as the second runners up taking home a cash prize of Nu 180,000. All the players of the three teams were awarded a statue of Chhana Dorji (Vajrapani) each.

In addition, six other cash prizes ranging between Nu 10,000-20,000 were awarded to the Best Archer of the tournament, most valuable player, best one-day highest league score, highest dobji, highest bull’s eye and highest dobji baa-kor.

According to the press release from the Office of the Gyaltshab, His Royal Highness The Gyaltshab met the under-12 athletes who took part in the event organised in Gyalpoizhing to commemorate HRH The Gyalsey’s first Birth Anniversary.

Students of six schools in Mongar also offered their pledges-to read at least 15 books in the 2017 academic year; to respect, be helpful and kind; and always abide by rules and strive for the best.

His Royal Highness the Gyaltshab also granted Tokha to the people who had gathered from six eastern dzongkhags, who were attending the carnival fair.

The programme ended with the offering of Tshogchhang to His Royal Highness the Gyaltshab, award of prizes and tashi lebay.
