Which single activity do you feel shall serve as an example to be replicated in other dzongkhags?

Creating awareness on the importance of the segregation of the waste at source. This has been successful to a large extent. Recyclable plastics and bottles are sold to scrap dealers and organic waste dumped in the compost pits.

This activity can be replicated in other dzongkhags.

What are your future plans and activities?

Waste segregation at source and putting up facilities is a priority.

Establishment of good waste management system has been successful in few geog administrations and the Dzongkhag intends to establish it in all 10 gewogs.

What activities were carried out to address waste management issues?

Initiated monthly mass waste collection schedule on the ninth of every month in collaboration with forestry, RBP and RSTA. The area for collection was divided among the sectors and business community from Khairi Gonpa to Hospital and Kenadang area.

With a garbage truck each in Nganglam Drungkhag and Pemagatshel Dzongkhag administration, waste collection has improved drastically in the past one year.

Pemagatshel has three private scrap dealers who collect all waste, segregates and sells.

Which single activity do you think shall serve as an example to be replicated in other Dzongkhags?

The private scrap dealer, teaching aids made out of plastics and pet bottles, decoration of flower gardens with pet bottles and voluntary bamboo plantation by schools can be replicated to the communities within the dzongkhag and by other Dzongkhags as well.

What are your future plans and activities?

The existing waste collection and management system should be maintained and waste management strategies improved with time.

More sensitisation programs to be held at the grass root level on the negative impact of waste.

Pemagatshel has already started to identify strategic location to erect signage in all locations within the Dzongkhag GC Road, religious places, picnic spots and tourist sites to address waste management issues in future.

What activities were carried out to address waste management issues?

Development of strategic waste management plan for each gewogs, throm, regional offices and other agencies. The waste management plan was developed after a nation-wide cleaning campaign in 2016.

Assisted gewog administrations by providing fabricated dustbins for collection of waste.

After receiving an additional refuse collection truck, collection services started for the Yenlag Throm like Lobesa and nearby places.

Dzongkhag Administration approved some private entrepreneurs for collection of recyclable wastes from gewogs and chiwogs.

Coinciding with World Environment Day, 2018 the Dzongkhag launched a Cleanest Gewog Competition based on fixed criteria for a year. The evaluation will start next month.

Which single activity do you think shall serve as an example to be replicated in other Dzongkhags?

Coordination in development of strategic waste management plan may serve as an example to other dzongkhags. This is because the waste management plan was formulated by respective agencies and it is more like their pledges to the dzongkhag on what they will carry out in terms of waste management in their respective areas. One example could be the monthly cleaning campaign conducted in respective gewogs. Some Gewogs are doing it on the first week of every month, some on the ninth and some on auspicious days. The people have agreed and fixed a penalty for absentees and latecomers during the monthly clean-up programme. The amount collected is then used to either provide refreshments to the participants or in constructing waste collection centers.

What activities were carried out to address waste management issues?

Mass cleaning campaign each month

Few gewogs have initiated segregating waste by type with installation of waste segregation at gewog centers.

The production of bamboo and cane products to replace plastic mugs and cups during mass gathering and plastic bins.

Which single activity do you think shall serve as an example to be replicated in other Dzongkhags?

Production of cane and bamboo dustbins can be substituted for plastic bins. Arecanut plates and mugs can replace plastic mugs and plates.

What are your future plans and activities?

The communities of two gewogs were supported by the dzongkhag administration and funds from BTFEC for infrastructure development and capacity developments

The group is in place and functional and biodegradable products will be diversified to ensure that the group can sell their products.

As part of environment day celebration this year, a competition was held among dzongkhags and thromdes to encourage waste management initiatives for environment protection. The dzongkhags and thromdes were judged on activities carried out over the last one year. The National Environment Commission Secretariat organised the event among the dzongkhags and thromdes. Kuensel will publish a series on the initiatives taken since June 4, 2017 – June 4, 2018.
