Science students bagged the top three positions of the Bhutan Higher Secondary Education Certificate (BHSEC) results, which the Bhutan Council for School Examination and Assessment (BCSEA) declared yesterday.

Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School (HSS) student Dechen Lhamo Gyeltshen topped the examination with 88.25 percent, Ngawang Yeshi with 87 percent and Tashi Tengyal with 86.75 percent of Ugyen Academy in the second and third positions.

All toppers said their teachers had a big role behind their success.

Dechen Lhamo Gyeltshen, 16, from Wangdue also stood second in the Class X examinations in 2015.  She said the result came as a shock because she found the examination a bit difficult. “I’m hoping to obtain a scholarship abroad so that I can study science and hopefully join a good profession to make my parents proud,” she said.

Ngawang Yeshi, 18, from Gedu, Chukha, a son of a businessman is hoping to get a scholarship. He thanked his teachers who helped him for achieving this feat.

“I feel so happy right now,” said Tashi Tengyel.  He is interested in studying Mechatronics “Apparently, I don’t think Department of Adult and Higher Education offers this course so I am not sure what I will be doing,” he said.

In the Commerce stream, Pema Choden and Thinley Dhendup from Ugyen Academy ranked first and second with 85.25 percent and 83.50 percent. Yeshi Yuden with 82.25 percent from Damphu Central School stood third.

Pema Choden, 19, from Kanglung, Trashigang said hard work is essential for good results. “As of now, I dream to become a Chartered Accountant and major in accounting but ultimately my goal is to serve my King, country and the people,” she said.

Thinley Dhendup said, “I would like to pursue marketing and E-commerce. However, in the long run I dream to create jobs rather than looking for job”.

Yeshi Yuden, 18, is a daughter of single mother who is a civil servant. She said she worked hard for the examination. She is planning to pursue business studies. “If I get a scholarship abroad in good courses, I’m planning on taking that,” she said.

Pasang Wangmo from Chukha Central School and Tempa Tshering from Mongar HSS share the first position with 85.25 percent in the Arts stream. Chhoeing Upel from Yangchenphug HSS came second with 84.50 percent and Ugyen Tshomo from Jakar HSS with 84 percent was third.

Pasang Wangmo said she revised the lessons covered each day. “I am a law lover and really long to become a lawyer. But I would accept anything.”

“I prepared since the beginning of the academic year,” said Tempa Tshering. He was excited that his dream would come true. He wants to study law.

Chhoeing Upel said that consistency is key and being optimistic is equally important. She is yet to decide what she wants to pursue for her further studies.

The overall pass percentage is 91.47, which is an increase of 6.65 percent over 84.82 pass percentage of 2016, a press release from BCSEA stated.

LCSC toppers

A total of 390 candidates from Taktse Central School, Desi High School, Dzongkha Development Training Institute, and Kuenphen Language and Cultural Training Institute sat for Language and Culture Studies Certificate (LCSC) examination 2017, of which 89.23 percent passed.

A student of Taktse CS, Dorji Gyeltshen was working in the field at his village in Radhi, Trashigang when he learnt about the results on social media. The 20-year-old son of a farmer topped the LCSC examination with 79.50 percent.

“Being the eldest in the family, I had to make my parents proud. I know how much my parents have sacrificed for us, the obstacles they have gone through. Keeping all of this in mind, I gave my best and I am happy that I have achieved my goal,” he said. He said he always wanted to be a Drungtsho.

Dorji Phuntsho of Desi High School came second with 78.25 percent. The 17-year-old from Kizom, Bumthang said he went to teachers often to clear doubts and discussed answers with his friends. He was not confident in English so he read as many books as possible to improve his English.

“I feel happy to have achieved this position. I would like to join a medical college,” the son of a farmer said.

A student of Dzongkha Development Training Institute, Jamyang Dorjee, a father of two secured the third position with 78 percent.

The 38-year-old from Bumdeling, Tashi Yangtse is currently working in Department of National Properties as a painter.

“Being from a humble family, I could not study in my earlier days,” he said.

He said that he took up the opportunity and gave his best.

“Being religious, I saw Rigzhung as the best means with which I can enhance my religious knowledge and learn the meaning of the religious texts.”

He said that he will continue to serving under the department and said that he wants to achieve more in the religious side.
