Tsirang dzongkhag court sentenced a 27-year old man from Kilkhorthang to five years in prison for committing a series of burglaries in Damphu town.
The March 8 judgment stated that Sonam Wangdi stole cash and edible items worth Nu 82,524 from 17 shops in Damphu town and peripheral areas from February 2019 to September last year.
He was arrested in September last year.
The court convicted him for 17 different burglary cases. He was found guilty of stealing cash ranging from Nu 390 to Nu 18,000 from different shops.
Sonam Wangdi was given a concurrent sentence, meaning that sentences may all be served at the same time of five years. His consecutive sentencing would otherwise be 51 years in prison.
Tsirang police arrested the man through a mobile voucher found at the suspect’s place during investigation.
According to a source, a shop owner registered the case with the mobile voucher’s serial number. Along with the mobile voucher, police also recovered about Nu 8,000 and edibles worth over Nu 1,600 from his house.
The judgment stated that shop owners did not seek compensation for the stolen edible items and cash. The court handed over a mobile phone and mobile voucher found with the convict to their respective owners.
