Road: Several portions of the road at about 16km from Samdrupjongkhar to Dewathang have started sinking due to rainfall this year.

The road has not only developed sharp speed bumps but also several minor cracks along the sinking areas.

This is increasingly becoming difficult, said travellers. Hundreds of trucks carrying gypsum ply the road every day.

“The road is scary,” said a driver. “There could be a slide anytime.”

DANTAK’s engineer Chandan Masdud said the road is sinking and that repair works must be carried out. He said that the whole edge of the mountain is sinking slowly.

“We’ll have to wait for the mountain to stabalise. Sinking should stop before we carry out the work, which is impossible during monsoon,” he said. “Once sinking stops, we’ll repair the portions.”

Chandan Masdud added that although the road has sunk it is not a major problem like the one in Wamrong that is sinking rapidly. But the pace at which this mountain is sinking is very slow.
