Paro police registered a case of sexual assault of an 11-year-old speech impaired girl. No one has been arrested for the crime as of yesterday evening.

The incident reportedly occurred on July 16 in a village after the girl went missing from the home. When the mother, who works for others in the village, found her missing, she went looking for the child and found her crying.

Sources in Paro said the parents, after finding the girl sexually assaulted, went to confront a man who the child alleged was the perpetrator. “But before the parents could inform the police, a 68-year-old man from the village complained to police claiming that the parents were falsely accusing him of raping the child.”

Police in Paro said they are investigating the case and that it is too early to make any comments.

Police, however, confirmed that the moment they received the complaint, they sent officials to investigate the case and took the girl to the hospital for medical checkup.

“Medical report confirmed the girl was sexually assaulted,” a police source said.

Officials from the forensic department of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) confirmed that the girl was brought for medical check up on July 22 and found duress around the minor’s thighs and injuries to the genital area.

“We confirmed 90 percent that the girl was sexually assaulted,” an official said.
