Sports: A total of 333 students from 18 schools across the country are gathered at Damphu central school in Tsirang for the 13th national school football and traditional archery tournament since December 1.

Department of Youth and Sports programme officer, Chencho Wangdi, said the programme was organised to keep the youth engaged during the winter vacation.

“The sports competitions are organised to motivate children’s participation at the grassroots level, provide wider exposure, foster solidarity amongst the youth and nurture sports excellence,” he said.

He added that the winners will be awarded rolling trophies and shields and participants with certificate and medals.

Winners from the dzongkhag school sports meet will be selected to participate at the regional level and the winners from the seven regions will compete in the final national-level sports meet.

The national-level sports meet is an annual event.

The programme officer added that besides the sports meet, talks on health, screening of educational movies and culture shows were organised.

The opening of the girl’s football tournament saw Pelrithang school from Sarpang defeat Taktse Rigzhung Higher Secondary School 3-0.

The sports meet will conclude on January 6.

The programme is funded by the government and organised by the Department of Youth and Sports.
