CID: As the new academic session nears, 46-year-old Kinley Om of Hamchi in Nahi, Wangdue is worried. Her 18-year-old daughter doesn’t have a citizenship identity card.

The school authority has been asking Kinley’s daughter to produce CID since she was studying in Class X. However, Kinley has not been able to procure citizenship card for her daughter so far.

Three years ago, while collecting tax, Tshogpa Kinga found that Kinley’s daughter’s name was missing from the census records.

“I was shocked when I was informed about that. I personally had gone to register her name,” said Kinley. “Now I am worried about her education and her future.”

Kinley and her husband separated soon after their daughter’s birth.

Kinga said that when they approached the census officer in Wangdue with all required documents and tax records, the census officer told them to approach the Office of Gyalpoi Zimpon.

Nahi gup approached the Office of Gyalpoi Zimpon a year ago but there has been no answer so far.

Kinley is a sharecropper who works for a family who lives in Thimphu.

“Expenses for children’s education are all borne by the landlord,” said Kinley.

Kinga said that there are five similar census cases in Nahi.
