Social: There was plenty of garbage for volunteers to pick up along the Thimchhu yesterday.

Some 121 Tashi InfoComm employees were involved in collecting trash along the Thimchhu between Dechen Zam in Langjophakha and Lungtenzampa.

The volunteers collected about 240 sacks of waste.

TashiCell’s human resource department manager, Ugyen Dorji said that the company had organised many cleaning campaigns before but this year’s is different.

“TashiCell has adopted and will clean the stretch from here on,” Ugyen Dorji said.

He said the reason for the company to volunteer to clean the Thimchhu is because it is one of the dirtiest areas in the city. The centenary farmer’s market at one side and settlements on the other side of the river have made it dirty.

“Rivers are important for many reasons and I believe Thimchhu has been ignored so we chose to clean it,” Ugyen Dorji said.

Pet bottles, plastic bags especially chips packets, and rags made up most of the waste collected.

The company’s public relation and media officer, Chencho Ohm said that the company has committed to Thimphu thromde to clean the river every month. “Once it looks better, we plan to clean it quarterly,” she said.

A volunteer, Sonam Wangmo said that the cleaning campaign will help reduce the waste being disposed at sites along the river, especially near the Centenary Farmer’s Market.

“When there isn’t much rubbish around, people tend to drop less,” Sonam Wangmo said.

TashCell employees in collaboration with the Department of Forest and Park Services have also planted more than 3,000 tree saplings and adopted about six acres of land at Kuenselphodrang last year.

The initiative is a part of TashiCell’s eighth anniversary celebrations.
