Crime: Tshimasham police on the night of November 15 apprehended three Bhutanese, two men and a woman trying to smuggle seven kilograms of gold to the bordering town of Phuentsholing. The three, a couple and a brother-in-law are in police custody.
Tshimasham police officer-in-charge (OC) Chencho Gyeltshen said they received information about the unfolding of this gamble and had barricaded the road with securities at a point about 100 metres away from the town towards the capital. The police stopped the trio at 11pm.
“We stopped their car and asked them to hand over the key to us,” the OC said. “However, they did not listen and went zooming through the barricaded road.”
Chencho Gyeltshen said this could have hurt the police personnel. However, nobody was hurt.
Police had to chase the land cruiser until the road point that leads to Tashigatshel from the main highway. By the time, they were caught the gold had been tossed outside from the car.
It was later in the custody they confessed to the crime. The police took them to locate the gold the next morning and recovered seven gold biscuits each weighing a kilogram.
Police officials said it’s not clear to whom the gold was supposed to be delivered or sold to or where the gold was brought from.
Police officials said investigation is still ongoing.
