Three new football clubs have booked their place in the 2022 Bhutan Premier League (BPL), the highest professional league in the country among the leading 10 clubs.

BPL 2022 will commence on August 13 in Thimphu.

The three newcomer teams are RTC (Royal Thimphu College) FC, Under-20 BFF (Bhutan Football Federation) Academy FC, and the FC Takin.

These clubs reserved the spot for the BPL  recently  in the BPL qualifier tournament among 11 teams from different dzongkhags who have contested for the six seats.

RTC Coach Ugyen Dorji said that his team was currently training hard to better prepare to feature in the BPL. He said the team has two national players and is comprised of students and college staff.

“We want to finish in the top five,” Ugyen Dorji said.

The other three teams that qualified for the BPL are Ugyen Academy (UA) FC, Tensung FC and Paro Rinpung FC.

In the BPL qualifier matches, the newly formed RTC FC topped the table with 28 points without losing any game. Of the 10 games played, RTC FC won nine and drew one.

RTC FC was closely followed by UA FC with 27 points and BFF Academy FC with 24 points.

FC Takin acquired 21 points, while Tensung FC and Paro Rinpung FC managed 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The six best teams from the BPL qualifiers will play among BPL league clubs – Druk Lhayul FC, Paro FC, Thimphu City FC, and Transport United FC.

In the 2021 BPL season, High Quality United FC was one of the best teams from Thimphu to book the spot for this year’s BPL. However, the club dissolved its senior team. Officials said it still has its grassroots teams operating.
