Transport United FC will play its first match against Nepal’s Jhapa XI tomorrow in the ongoing 10th All India Chief Minister’s Gold Cup Football Tournament at the Jorethang Stadium in Sikkim.
The tournament has returned after a five-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Organised by the Namchi District Football Association, the tournament, which is scheduled from January 9 to 21, features 12 teams from India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Transport United FC landed in Sikkim on January 13 and began their official training yesterday.
Transport United aniticipate a challenging first game but are determined to ensure a competitive match, building on their successful participation in the ninth edition in 2020.
Transport United reached the semifinals in 2020 defeating the Indian Navy team and Minerva Punjab FC.
Jhapa XI won their first match on January 13 against GTA XI from Darjeeling in a penalty shootout.
The club’s official, Hari Gurung, is optimistic about the first match, hinting that the players underwent rigorous training for a month. He said the tournament was crucial for the team to gain international exposure.
The club features mostly young players and has also recruited some key players from other clubs.
The club posted on social media: “Transport United FC has always been about grit, teamwork, and passion. With every match, we aim to inspire our fans and uphold the proud legacy of our club. This tournament is another opportunity to showcase our commitment and bring home glory.”
The tournament seeks to transcend the boundaries of sports, combining the dynamic energy of football with the rich cultural heritage of the harvest festival. It also serves to honor sportsmanship, vibrant traditions, and community spirit.
This year, the event coincided with Makar Sankranti, a traditional Hindu festival celebrating the sun’s transition into Makar (Capricorn).
