More than 40 women in Trongsa were trained recently to weave basket and bags from the plastic waste to create awareness on waste management.

Green Bhutan waste management in collaboration with dzongkhag administration of Trongsa conducted the training with support from the Department of Local Government and the European Union.

The participants were divided into groups to avoid mass gathering.

Trainer Chogyel Lham said that the training was expected to help create awareness on waste management and the importance of segregation at source. “It will also help women generate income by selling the products.”

She said that the amount to waste going to the landfill would reduce significantly with segregation at the source.

The plastic waste can be converted into bags and the kitchen wastes can be used in the gardens and there won’t be much waste at the waste coming to the landfill like now.

The participants had to collect discarded plastic, wash them thoroughly, dry, cut, and weave different bags and baskets out of waste.

Pema Yangzom, a participant, said that she would henceforth ensure that plastic waste does not go to landfill.

After the training, participants will be required to weave at least one bag in a month and send the finished product to the outlet.
