Allaying rumours of an alleged murder, Police in Phuentsholing clarified that the 30-year-old man and his 33-year old former wife had taken their own lives. The incident happened at the lower market area.

Although the police was informed on March 3, police say the incident could have occurred about four days earlier.

The incident went viral on social media claiming that the man allegedly murdered the woman and then committed suicide.

Superintendent of police (SP) Lt. Colonel Wangchukla said it has been clinically declared that it was suicide.

He said there were some empty liquor cans in the room, which was latched from inside. “There were also no knives and other weapons used.”

Relatives of the man reported the incident to police after they went to check on him at his house. The man’s second ex-wife had said that he had not called their children for some time and had asked his relatives to visit him.

Police said that the relatives reported foul smell around the deceased’s house.

The case wasn’t reported sooner to police since the lower market area sells dry fish, the smell of which, according to locals, camouflaged the smell of the bodies.
