The forest fire that started at 11am yesterday in Tsamang gewog, Mongar, was contained by 7pm.

The fire, according to sources was brought under control by heavy rain in the area.

Forest and dzongkhag officials, Tsamang gewog officials, Desuups, teachers and villagers tried to contain the fire but could not.

The fire started from an area near the Tsamang school when a group of officials, who were observing the world water day went to clear water sources.

Schoolteachers say they are investigating how and why the fire broke out.

According to the forest officials, 1000s of chirpine trees were destroyed since the fire was along the wind direction.

Police in Mongar says they are yet to find out the cause of the incident.
