Police in Sarpang arrested a 33-year-old woman in Sarpang for allegedly murdering her stepmother on October 16.

Family members who were sleeping in separate rooms came to know about the incident when the stepmother screamed from the room where she was sleeping alone on October 16 night.

The accused had allegedly hit the woman with a brick and stabbed her with a kitchen knife. The weapons used were surrendered to the police.

Sources said that the deceased was brought dead to Sarpang hospital. Family members knew that the deceased was stabbed only after the police examined the body.

The police were informed of the incident after the deceased was admitted to the hospital. The victim had suffered severe injuries, according to sources.

The deceased, a 54-year-old woman from Samdrupjongkhar, was married to a man who had two daughters from his first wife. She was living in Shaychamthang, Sarpang with her husband and two stepdaughters. Both are married to a man.

Sources said that the family had moved to the town from Thimphu during the pandemic, and were running a shop at Shaychamthang town. The shop was closed one week before the incident.

Police are investigating the case.
