Yangchen Gatshel Lower Secondary School in Thimphu became the 16th school to offer inclusive and special education programmes in the country.

The school has enrolled 27 Special Education Needs (SEN) students.

A press release from the education ministry states that the programme opened on December 13. With this, the education ministry has achieved its 11th Plan’s target to establish schools with inclusive and special education programmes.

It states that schools with inclusive and special education programmes will value, accept and support education for children with disabilities whose needs are currently not met by general schools.

As of today, there are 555 students with SEN enrolled in the schools.

The press release also states that the education ministry and the dzongkhag administrations have plans to build accessible school infrastructure, train teachers, and supply teaching-learning materials in collaboration with development partners and stakeholders.

The ministry also plans to study and endorse at least one such school in every dzongkhag or thromde by the end of 12th Plan. UNICEF country office supported the initiative.
