… along with a statue of Drogyen Lama Zhang
Dedication: On the first Birth Anniversary of His Royal Highness The Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, the people of Zhemgang are dedicating a golden butter lamp, the first of its kind in the dzongkhag.
The golden butter lamp was made of 816.2 grams, which is equal to 70 tolas (1 tola is equal to 11.66 grams) of high quality pure gold and 45 tolas of silver.
The lamp is worth Nu 2.61 million (M).
The lamp has a conch and victory banners carved onto it. On its stand, the eight lucky signs are carved.
Lam Neten and the dzongdag of Zhemgang along with the people and contributors will inaugurate the golden butter lamp in Zhemgang Dzong on February 5, which is the first Birth Anniversary of HRH The Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck.
The initiative was undertaken in March last year. Along with the golden butter lamp, the people of Zhemgang, beginning in 2010, also undertook the task of creating the statue of Drogyen Lama Zhang, who is the founder of Zhemgang. The statue will be inaugurated along with the golden butter lamp.
Coordinator of the project, Ugyen Lhendup, said while many lhakhangs and dzongs in the country have at least one golden butter lamp, the entire region of Zhemgang did not.
“We initiated a project to have at least one golden butter lamp to bring good luck and peace to the Kheng region, and the country,” he said. “As a token of the celebration of the auspicious day, the people of Kheng dedicates the golden butter lamp to celebrate the first Birth Anniversary of HRH The Gyalsey,” he added.
People from all walks of life, not only from the Kheng region but even those residing abroad made contributions, Ugyen Lhendup said.
“It will be a moment of great happiness not only for the people of Zhemgang but also for rest of the country to witness the golden butter lamp being lit in Zhemgang Dzong,” he said. “It is our prayer that one day HRH The Gyalsey will be able to light the butter lamp. The people of Zhemgang wish and pray that the positive merits gained through lighting the golden butter lamp brings good health and long life to HRH The Gyalsey.”
Making sure that the project is successful is Zhemgang dratshang’s Lam Neten Karma Gayley. “May the body, speech and mind of HRH The Gyalsey eternally radiate like the light of the lamp,” he said.
Tsip Rinzin, who is 101 years old, and is probably the oldest citizen in Trong village, said the entire village is excited to witness and celebrate the first Birth Anniversary of HRH The Gyalsey.
“May the merits accumulated through lighting the golden butter lamp benefit every sentient being. We are always praying for the long life and happiness of HRH The Gyalsey,” Tsip Rinzin said.
