Gelephu—For residents of Sarpang, the 117th National Day celebration yesterday was filled with hopes for the future as they eagerly awaited more details about the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) project.

Tshering Dorji, 56, from Pemathang in Gelephu gewog, was among the thousands gathered at Thubten Choekhorthang—Gelephu Sports Association Ground. Like many others, he had eagerly awaited His Majesty the King’s address for clarity on the GMC project.

“Different people have been sharing different information, which only added to the confusion among residents,” he said. “But now, my doubts are finally cleared after hearing more details in today’s Royal Address.”

Tshering Dorji owns a one-acre plot of land near the airport that was recently surveyed for development. “Although I am unsure if my land will be affected, I am optimistic about the progress,” he said.

The announcement of the Gelephu International Airport, set to begin construction next year and expected to be completed by 2029, has brought hope for struggling local businesses.

A couple who recently relocated from Thimphu to Gelephu to open a restaurant believes the influx of people will create more economic opportunities. “We purchased the restaurant, but there are only a few customers. We were initially planning to leave if the business continued to struggle after three months. However, we expect the situation to change,” he said.

The excitement drew people of all ages, including two wheelchair users, to the celebration. Officials from the Assam state of India also attended the celebration.

For 20-year-old Tshering Wangchuk, a wheelchair user, the National Day was a long-awaited opportunity. “I never had the chance to see His Majesty in person before, but this is my chance to listen to His Majesty’s golden words and watch the King on the screen. I look forward to hearing His Majesty’s address again,” he said.

Another wheelchair user, 24-year-old Karma Zangmo, arrived at the celebration venue around 8am with her uncle. She shared that she was excited to attend the celebration in person, as she has always valued the significance of such important occasions.

“Since her father had to attend a programme at school, I came with her,” explained Phurpa Wangchuk. “This is also an opportunity for her to witness the significance of National Day and understand the legacy and values shared by His Majesty the King.”
