With more and more buildings coming up in Thimphu, it has become difficult for citizens and motorists to navigate around many parts of the city without a proper addressing system.

At a time when delivery of goods and food from restaurants and shops is picking up, the lack of a proper addressing system is a major problem.

This problem is expected to decrease with Thimphu Thromde’s City Addressing System (CAS).

With CAS, the maps will be able to show addresses of numbered units and buildings within the thromde.

“CAS is fundamental to any thromde to deliver effective and efficient service to the citizens,” says the CAS guideline. “It is specifically relevant for use in today’s digital environment where addresses could be readily located for a variety of purposes, especially emergency service responses.”

The system is still in its early development stages. The next step would be to start the numbering of buildings in the thromde.

After the numbering is completed, the thromde will collect information on the units—locality, address, street, etc.

“After this stage, the whole addressing system will be completed,” a thromde official added.

This information is expected to assist the thromde in terms of service-oriented works as each commercial or domestic area has different requirements, according to the official.

“Currently it is very difficult for people to find an exact location, especially in areas that are densely populated with so many buildings. The CAS will help resolve this issue,” the official said.

The official added the system would improve convenience for the citizens in availing efficient services.  “In the past, just to call a plumber took time as people would have to explain their location or building. But with the help of CAS, their location can be easily shared in such instances.”

The official said that thromde would install signboards for accurate directions within the city.
