Kencho Tshering and Kunzang Dorji are the two aspiring candidates for Bumthang’s upcoming National Council (NC) election.

Contesting from Chhokhor gewog, Kencho Tshering, 40, secured 675 Yes votes while 130 voted No during dhamngoi zomdu on March 9.

Kencho Tshering studied Bachelor’s degree in commerce and an advanced diploma in Eco-tourism management. He has a Master in Business Administration International from Edith Cowan University in Western Australia.

He also worked as an Administration Officer with the Department of Local Government. He contested the NC elections in 2018.

In Tang gewog, 260 voters voted for Kunzang Dorji, 38, while 36 voted against him. Dhamngoi zomdu for Tang was held on March 10. Kunzang Dorji has a Master’s degree in International Finance.

For Chhokhor gewog, zomdu was held at Zangtherpo Primary school, while for Tang gewog held at the gewog center.

Bumthang has four gewogs. Chumig and Ura gewogs, and Chamkhar Throm did not have any aspiring candidates.



Dhamngoi zomdu for Ura gewog was held on March 4. A total of 142 villagers attended the meeting and declared that they did not have any nominees.

Chhumig gewog had its dhamngoi zomdu on March 5 and 2,017 villagers attended. 

On March 6, 77 voters from Chamkhar town gathered at Chamkhar ground for dhamngoi zomdu.

Bumthang has 10,836 registered voters of which Chhokhor gewog has the highest with 2,866 voters, Chhumig has 2,537, Tang has 2,027, Ura has 1,639, and Chamkhar throm has 1,768.

There were two contestants in the NC elections 2008 and four in 2013. Only two contested in 2018.

The poll day for the NC elections is on April 20.
