Trongsa district court sentenced two women to two months in prison and fined five times the cost of the total tobacco products they possessed.

The women can pay thrimthue in lieu of imprisonment.

One of the guilty was charged for possession of tobacco products worth Nu 44,020—480 packets of cigarettes containing 1,800 sticks, 1,622 Baba khaini, 240 packets of Nevala khaini and 1, 900 sticks of bidi.

The other was charged for possession of tobacco products worth Nu 22,160—320 packets, containing 3200 sticks, 546 packets of Baba khaini and 120 packets of Nevala khaini.

The tobacco products were brought from Jaigoan and transported by a taxi from Phuentsholing.

The women were caught at Bjeezam checkpoint while they were travelling to deliver the products to Bumthang and Trongsa on July 3, 2019.

They were charged for breaching section 11 (E) of Amendment Tobacco Act of Bhutan 2014 and section 51 (B) of the Act.

They were charged for not paying the customs tax and for possessing tobacco products beyond permissible limit.

The seized tobacco products will be surrendered to the Bhutan Narcotics Control Authority.
