A former civil servant, Sonam Phuntso, will contest from Gangzur-Minjey constituency, Lhuentse for the Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) in the upcoming National Assembly elections.

Sonam Phuntsho, 39, a graduate of College of National Resources has an experience of 18 years in the agriculture sector. He served as an Agriculture Extension Officer in Balam gewog, Mongar and as the Assistant Dzongkhag Agriculture officer in Lhuentse before resigning to join  politics.

DPT claims that Sonam Phuntsho started Chezang Shamu Shogchong Khang, the first commercial mushroom farm, in eastern Bhutan. 

With this, DPT has declared 20 candidates so far.
