Thimphu City FC will face Paro FC in the first Coronation Cup today at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu.

Thimphu City FC, Paro FC, Transport United FC and the Druk Lhayul FC will play a league format tournament with each team playing twice against each team. The two top teams with the highest points will play the finals on June 2, coinciding with the coronation anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) is organising the event in collaboration with the Woezer Events.

Thimphu City FC’s President Hishey Tshering said that the coronation cup was to engage the four clubs that are currently idle before the Bhutan Premier League (BPL).

BFF’s competition officer Kinley Dorji said the BPL starts in August and competent clubs could not engage in any tournament after the President Cup in Mongar in January.

Kinley Dorji said the club owners have been paying salaries for the players nowadays without any competition.

“Next month, BPL qualifier begins, where 10 teams will contest for the six spots to qualify for the BPL,” Kinley Dorji said.

He said the Coronation Cup would have been conducted among five clubs, but the High-Quality United FC’s owner had dissolved the club. In the 2021 BPL, ranking, High Quality was in fourth place.

Organisers have also started a ticketing system for the local tournament for the first time. Spectators have to pay Nu 50 a match.
