In the first match of the football tournament to mark Punakha Central School’s (PCS) golden jubilee, Punakha LG team lead by Foreign Minister Dr Tandi Dorji lost to PCS Staff 6 – 2 yesterday.
The foreign minister’s team included National Assembly Deputy Speaker Tshencho Wangdi, National Council MP Namgay Dorji, Dzongkhag Tshogdu Thrizin Sonam Dorji and other members of the local government. The foreign minister played for around 21 minutes.
Taxi United Punakha beat Bjishong Central School 4-1 in the second match.
The tournament has 26 teams from Gasa, Punakha and Wangduephodrang which includes Royal Bhutan Police Punakha and Wangdue, Ugyen Academy staff (FC), Khuruthang business community, Punakha LG and Dharma (FC).
Each team paid an entry fee of Nu 15,000 and players had to be above 25 years.
PCS Principal, Sherab Tshering said that the school attempts to promote and enhance community bonds in the three dzongkhags through the tournament.
“Since there is a lack of recreation, the tournament is to entertain the public,” said Sherab Tshering.
The finals will be played on October 22.
