National Council’s first extraordinary session which began yesterday will deliberate on the annual budget for the fiscal year (FY) 2020-21.
This is the first extra-ordinary session of any House of Parliament since its establishment in 2008. For the National Assembly, the ongoing session is a continuation of the winter session.
National Council’s session will conclude on June 16. The House will mainly deliberate and pass the budget for the FY 2020-21 and the Supplementary Budget Appropriation Bill for the FY 2019-20.
In his opening remarks, Chairperson Tashi Dorji expressed gratitude to His Majesty The King for His noble leadership and unwavering support and guidance for the country and the people amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
He thanked His Holiness the Je Khenpo, Zhung Dratshang and other religious bodies for their continuous prayers and ceremonies to prevent the pandemic.
The House will resume today with the introduction of the Budget Appropriation Bills by Finance Minister Namgay Tshering.
