In all the three constituencies of Pemagatshel, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) appealed to the voters for a chance.

PDP President Tshering Tobgay’s campaign in Nanong-Shumar, Khar-Yurung, and Nganglam  emphasised on supporting its candidates and giving it a chance in this election.

Pemagatshel has been a stronghold for the Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) in previous elections, predominantly electing opposition members. While DPT is out of the race in the general elections, observers suggest that the dedicated supporters of DPT aligning with either BTP or PDP could influence the outcome in these constituencies.

Tshering Tobgay addressed concerns about perceived negligence in terms of developmental activities in Pemagatshel during PDP’s tenure.

“Although Pemagatshel was represented by an opposition member, we have not done any discrimination here.”

He clarified that he visited Pemagatshel on numerous occasions, both as the leader of the opposition and later as the prime minister, refuting the rumours that were circulating.

“If I had the intention to remain unsupportive, I would not have visited several times,” he said.

He acknowledged the road development during the first government’s time but highlighted PDP’s contribution to blacktopping roads in the region.

He refuted suspicions about PDP slowing the construction of Denchi Dzong and stressed on personal support for various projects in Pemagatshel.

The president appealed for support, citing previous initiatives of the PDP such as transforming Yelchen Primary School and Yurung HSS to Central School.

PDP pledged to upgrade Denchi throm, widen the road stretch between Pemagatshel and Nganglam and improve Pemagatshel to Kurizampa road connectivity.

In addition, he stated that as Nganglam transforms into an economic hub, residents of Pemagatshel will be the primary beneficiaries, with bigger opportunities on the horizon.

Despite DPT’s deep rooted support in Pemagatshel, the primary round election saw PDP penetrate in Nanong-Shumar by PDP.

Tshering Tobgay said that instead of supporting a party based on regional basis, voters have to choose the capable and the stronger party that would be beneficial to the country and the people.

Regarding the outcome of the primary election, Tshering Tobgay said that it is important to elect the right party and urged people to prioritise competence over regional affiliations.
