Jigmi Wangdi | Wangdue

Phub Dorji emerged victorious in the National Council (NC) elections 2023, winning the provisional representative seat for Wangdue.

Of the 4,143 votes, Phub Dorji secured 3,183 through the electronic voting machine (EVM) and 960 from postal ballots.

The competition was tight, as fellow candidates Karma Dorji, Ugyen, Nim Gyeltshen, and Kuenley Tshering did not fall far behind, receiving a total of 2,204, 3,176, 3,498, and 1,709 votes, respectively.

As the poll closed, 11,023 people cast their votes at 45 polling stations in Wangdue. Despite heat and strong winds, voters came out in droves, many carrying their lunch baskets.

The election saw a higher turnout of female voters. The older generation participated as well, walking with the help of walking sticks and their children.

At the election office, security was tight as officials counted the postal ballots.

The vote counting proceeded smoothly without any discrepancies, while representatives of the candidates waited eagerly for the results.

For Phub Dorji, this was his first time contesting the NC elections.
