Choden was not from Thimphu. But for 17 years, she lived with her cousin in Hongtsho. From Ngar village in Gangzur, Lhuenste, Choden had no land to return home.

Her mother had not inherited land and was compelled to take shelter at Yodra Gonpa to lead a monastic life and then later move to Thimphu. Choden followed her mother.
