Archery: In their maiden appearance in an archery competition outside their village in Thrakthri, Sakteng, team Kandum bagged the second position during a tournament that was organised in Radhi last week.
The highlanders from Sakteng who were trailing in the quarterfinals fought back and made it to the semifinals with a winning karay from Sonam Tshewang.
Similarly, during the finals against teams from Yangnear and Bartsham, Kesang Norbu of team Kandum hit a bullseye in the final round of the match to win them the second position in the tournament.
Donning their signature red chupa, the team from Sakteng added more excitement to the tournament said one of the spectators.
Yeshi from team Kandum said that the win came to them as a pleasant surprise. “None of us expected that we would reach the finals, let alone win,” he said. “It was our first tournament outside the village. We were not aware of the rules also but at the end we couldn’t have expected a better result than this.”
After hearing the news of the team’s victory, villagers arranged a reception for the team. “It was a very proud moment not just for the team but also for the whole village,” said Yeshi adding that given an opportunity, the team will participate in similar tournaments in the future.
Yeshi and his four teammates won a 24-inch LED TV each. The winner of the tournament was a team from Bartsham.
A total of 24 teams took part in the three-day tournament organised by locals in Radhi gewog in Trashigang to commemorate the Birth of HRH The Gyalsey.
