The Samdrupjongkhar-Trashigang highway has remained closed to traffic since yesterday morning after the road foundation at Moshi was washed away due to  heavy rain.

However, the road is expected to be restored and the highway opened to traffic in the afternoon today if the rain subsides.

The Project DANTAK deployed three machines and around 37 workers to restore the highway yesterday but continuous rain hampered their efforts.

The DANTAK officials said the Project DANTAK and the Department of Surface and Transport (DST) workers cleared the minor blocks on the highway.

“We’re carrying out the restoration and would open the highway for traffic if the rain subsides but the situation would become worse if it continues,” said an official.

The commuters said that it would help if project DANTAK and DST workers could continue clearing the block after 5pm. “They do not work after 5pm at present,” commuters said.

Project DANTAK officials said that although they are clearing the block, continuous rain and foggy weather at the site hamper the works.

“It’s also important for us to maintain the safety of the labourers as there are landslides in certain areas,” an official said.
