Coinciding with the World Children’s Day, UNICEF announced Sonam Wangchen as Bhutan’s first national youth goodwill ambassador today.

The 16-year-old singer and musician will use his popularity and digital presence to engage with young people and empower them to speak about the issues facing them.

Press release from UNICEF stated that the goodwill ambassador would speak about online safety and violence against children.

“As UNICEF youth ambassador, I really want to work together with young people, especially on issues I believe are important to young people. More than 71 percent of youth are online and I wish the digital world to be a safe place for the young people,” said Sonam Wangchen.

Sonam started singing early on in his life.

“A role model for his peers, Sonam at every opportunity encourages young people to study well, to believe in themselves and to follow their dreams,” UNICEF press release said.

His song called Choe Thom Da was 2015 hit, especially among young people.  He has performed at many national events, charitable concerts and worked on original soundtracks for movies.
