The Gyalsey was born on a Yangza when the element of Za and Karma was in a perfect union
Astrology: While Bhutanese are convinced that the birth of His Royal Highness The Gyalsey in the Fire Male Monkey Year coinciding with the birth year of Guru Rinpoche marks a very special significance, not many are aware of how is it significant.
The Fire Male Monkey Year is considered a miraculous year as Guru Rinpoche chose to be born in this particular year.
It was during this year that Guru Padmasambhava first appeared in this world, in the form of a beautiful child sitting on a magnificent lotus in lake Dhanakosha, which is present day Swat in Pakistan.
In the Guide to Accomplishing the Guru, Padmasambhava had said:
Upon that day of days,
The tenth day of the monkey month, the monkey year,
And all the tenth days of the moon-such times of power as these,
Sending emanations, I will fill the world,
Supreme and common siddhis richly to bestow
Considered as an emanation of Buddha Amitabha, Guru Rinpoche was miraculously born from the lotus in the Fire Male Monkey Year eight years after Buddha Shakyamuni entered into Mahaparinirvana, according to the director of the National Museum in Paro, Khenpo Phuntsho Tashi.
“The Gyalsey arrived at this auspicious time. It is a powerful sign for both the people and the country as the qualities of compassion and wisdom will present through his reign,” said the director.
He explained that the lotus flower symbolizes purity and primordial wisdom and the golden thunderbolt, which emerged from the Buddha Amitabha’s heart, represents the skillful means.
The male energy was the seed, which combined with the lotus (or female aspects), to give a miraculous year due to the miraculous birth of Guru Rinpoche.
In the Epic of Padma, Guru Rinpoche said:
In this noble field that Buddha tamed,
An emanation of the teacher is in front of every being.
In former ages I was Amitabha, Lord of Boundless Light,
And, on the hill of Potala, the lord of Who Sees,
And Padmasambhava on Dhanakosha Lake
Khenpo Phuntsho Tashi explained that fire is always represented in the colour red and the red colour of Buddha Amitabha symbolizes the wisdom of discrimination (Sosor Togpai Sherab).
The element Fire
From an astrology point of view, Fire, which is one of the five elements, represents power or authority. A person born in the fire element will possess power in their life. The other four elements are Water, Iron, Wood and Earth.
The Fire that represents power is one of the four spiritual deeds that are associated with our day-to-day activities.
The Fire Monkey comes once every twelve years, whereas the Fire Male Monkey Year comes once in a sixty-year cycle or Rabjung and this tradition goes back many cycles to the arrival of Guru Rinpoche. “The royal birth in this year is therefore a manifestation of the arrival of Guru Rinpoche,” said Khenpo Phuntsho Tashi.
“The auspicious timing of The Gyalsey’s arrival coinciding with Guru Rinpoche’s birth year demonstrates the alignment of spiritual heritage along with historical connections leading to Guru Rinpoche.”
He explained that as The Gyalsey is also a descendent of the spiritual treasure revealer of Bhutan, Terton Pema Lingpa, the prophecy is fulfilled for a noble and beneficial reign for the people of Bhutan”.
In one of the shorter versions of the biography of Guru Rinpoche, known as Karthang Deupa, it is mentioned that:
When ascending the throne from the region of Bumthang,
The prince, this emanation of mine will come forth and reign with noble rule and compassion
Khenpo Phuntsho Tashi said this noble birth serves as an offering to the Bodhisattvas’ activity in the form of the hereditary rulers of Bhutan and is also a precious gift to the people of Bhutan as wish-fulfilling jewel.
“This helps to realize the potential of the country through enlightened leadership, which the country is so fortunate to possess,” he said.
When Guru Rinpoche propagated Vajrayana Buddhism throughout the Himalayan region, Bhutan was one of the sacred places blessed by Guru Rinpoche’s presence.
This means that Bhutan is a very special place where liberation is possible under the reign of benevolent rulers who are emanations of Guru Rinpoche, said Khenpo Phuntsho Tashi.
The Gyalsey was born on Friday and on that particular day, the element of Za (planet) and Karma (star) was a perfect union of Sa (earth).
Astrology descriptions of the union of two earth elements is considered as the perfection of wealth.
An astrologer and a lecture of the College of Education in Paro, Rinchen Wangdi said the union of two earth elements is the representation of good wealth, and the birth of The Gyalsey on this day is a sign of the country’s Norb (Jewel), which will bring peace and prosperity.
“As Friday is the day of wealth or Yangza the birth of His Royal Highness on the day symbolizes prosperity,” he said.
