Former Speaker of the National Assembly, Wangchuk Namgyel, received white scarf and patang from His Majesty the King during the 117th National Day yesterday.
Wangchuk Namgyel has had a distinguished career in education spanning over 25 years. He served as a school teacher, principal, and District Education Officer. He also held a key position at the Ministry of Education, where he played a vital role in shaping educational policies and programmes.
Wangchuk Namgyel expressed deep gratitude for the recognition awarded to him by His Majesty the King. He emphasised the importance of re-dedicating oneself to service as the country undergoes significant transformation.
In 2018, he served as a Member of Parliament until October 2023. During that time, he was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament, contributing to legislative landmark processes and governance.
Since March 2024, Wangchuk Namgyel has been serving as the Director of Student Affairs and Faculty Services at Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law.
Tshewang Tandin, the President of Royal Thimphu College, also received white scarf and patang from His Majesty the King.
Tshewang Tandin is a career educator with over 35 years of experience in various educational roles in Bhutan.
He has held leadership positions at institutions ranging from secondary schools to universities, including serving as the Director General of the Royal Institute of Management and the Department of Adult and Higher Education.
“I humbly dedicate the recognition to the countless individuals who have inspired and supported me throughout the journey—students and their parents, whose thrust and unwavering belief have been a constant source of motivation,” he said.
He added that this recognition is not merely a celebration of personal achievement but a testament to the shared spirit and aspirations of everyone who has been part of this long and fulfilling path.
He expressed gratitude to His Majesty the King for His vision and leadership, which inspires a sense of duty and service to the nation. He also acknowledged the benefits of the educational and training systems established by the Kings.
Tshewang Tandin also served as Principal and teachers of several schools — Principal of Yangchenphug High School, Thimphu, Vice Principal and Principal, Paro High School and teacher, and Vice Principal, Sarpang High school.
